Thri-kreen are a hardy and dangerous race of sapient insect people. Originally from the salty desert, they have become a well-established, if rare, race across the world, both due to their ability to live in many areas, and their expertise in textiles. Their culture and social practices are rather remarkably different from those of other gifted races, and this can occasionally cause friction. For instance, they have little understanding of why it is improper to feast on the flesh of a fellow sapient creature.
Thri-kreen have taken fondly to exploration, woodwork, survival and trade – although the language barrier can sometimes be a difficulty, as they communicate through a series of clicks and buzzes, and cannot speak the common tongue, or most racial speech. They have had some keen humans translate much into their language, however, and so have learned literacy and wisdom as well, so most are capable of communicating in written form. A few have even learned martial arts, though most rely on their natural deadliness as giant intelligent insects. Religiously, they are attracted in two directions – Qodesh appeals to those who live in the desert, where they are far from human society, and can focus on purity and holiness. Others might lean towards Ra’a, as thri-kreen are not above thinking themselves more worthy than the average race, given their multitude of limbs and ability to fly short distances.
Thri-kreen’s natural grasp of textiles makes them excellent weavers, able not only to create their own wispy silken threads, but even able to ‘weave sand’, through use of their saliva to harden it. They are said to be able to create weaves of stunning beauty and strength from almost any material.
