Animal ken is the ability to forge a relationship with animals. Primarily, it is used for the purpose of their exploitation – bees for honey, pigs for bacon, sheep for wool, cows for milk, chickens for eggs and so on. However, it also allows the raising of horses for riding, dogs for hunting and companionship, oxen for beasts of burden, and cats for who the hell knows why.
Animal ken includes not only the training of animals, but also selective breeding habits, proper care and feeding, and similar farmyard activities involving animals. Obviously the ability to raise animals for such purposes is a highly important and valuable gift to civil society, and as such it is greatly valued by many races. Minotaurs find it useful for keeping animals alive on long sea voyages, for instance.
The gift originally came from the Sylvanites, who use it only for the care and tending of creatures, never for the consumption of their flesh or in slave labour (as they would put it).
